Guru Granth Sahib - Sikhism 1.6.1

The Guru Granth Sahib Ji, also known as Shri Guru Granth Sahib, is the living Guru of Sikhism. It is the English translated version of the original text, which is a voluminous collection of 1430 Angs that was compiled and composed over the period of Sikh gurus from 1469 to 1708.

This sacred text contains hymns (Shabad) or Baani that describe the qualities of God and the significance of meditating on God's name. Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth guru, affirmed the sacred text as his successor after adding Guru Tegh Bahadur's bani to the Adi Granth, thus elevating it to the status of Guru Granth Sahib.

Considered the holy scripture of Sikhs, the Guru Granth Sahib is revered as the teachings of the Ten Gurus and plays a central role as a source of prayer and guidance in Sikh worship.

The initial rendition, known as Adi Granth, was compiled by Guru Arjan, while the second rendition, Guru Granth Sahib, was augmented by Guru Gobind Singh with all 115 hymns of Guru Tegh Bahadur. Following the tenth guru's demise, multiple copies were distributed by Baba Deep Singh and Bhai Mani Singh.

Written in the Gurmukhī script and encompassing various dialects such as Lehndi Punjabi, Braj Bhasha, Khariboli, Sanskrit, and Persian, this text embodies diverse cultural influences under the generic title of Sant Bhasha.
